我爸爸在電腦公司工作

My Father Works at a Computer Company

One Step Further

🧑‍🏫A-not-A questions

Mandarin’s neutral yes/no question: verb + 不 + verb — 你爸爸的工作忙不忙? (Is your dad’s work busy?) · 你是不是學生? (Are you a student?) · 你今天累不累? Same meaning as …嗎, just more matter-of-fact.

🧑‍🏫有沒有 — the A-not-A of 有

有 negates with 沒 (Lesson 2), so its A-not-A is 有沒有: 你有沒有電腦? (Do you have a computer?) · 他有沒有兄弟姊妹? (Does he have siblings?)

🧑‍🏫呢 ne — “how about…?”

Once context is set, bounce the question back with just N/Pron + 呢: 我姓王,您呢? (I’m surnamed Wang — and you?) · 你媽媽呢? (How about your mom?) No need to repeat the whole question.

🧑‍🏫的 de — the possessive

Possessor + 的 + possessed: Gloria的電腦 (Gloria’s computer) · 他的工作 (his job) · 我的名字 (my name). With family and close relationships 的 usually drops: 我媽媽, 你爸爸 — not 我的媽媽.

🧑‍🏫很 hěn — the default glue

Adjective-verbs like 忙 and 累 link to their subject with 很, no 是: 他的工作很忙 (his work is busy) · 他每天都很累 (he’s tired every day). Bare 他忙 sounds like a contrast; 很 is the neutral default, not always literally “very”.
